What Moving Day Looks Like: Retirement Home & Assisted Living Moves

Whether the move is into independent living, assisted living, or long-term care, moving day itself carries a lot of feeling — for the person moving and for the family around them. The best thing anyone can do for that day is make it calm and predictable. Here’s what a well-run retirement home move looks like, start to finish, based on the hundreds we’ve managed across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Before the day: a suite plan and gentle downsizing

Retirement community suites are compact, and the biggest pre-move job is deciding what comes along. Get the suite’s floor plan with measurements and choose the furniture and belongings that will genuinely fit — the familiar bed, the favourite chair, the photos and lamps that make a room feel like theirs. Then downsize the rest gradually, well before moving week, at a pace that’s kind. Coordinating with the community’s move-in team

Every seniors’ community has move-in procedures: a booked elevator or service entrance, an assigned move-in window, paperwork, and sometimes rules about what the building’s team handles versus the movers. We coordinate with senior living communities across the Lower Mainland regularly and work directly with their move-in teams, so dates, access, and expectations are settled before the truck arrives — and the family isn’t chasing logistics by phone on an already-emotional day.

What moving day itself looks like

• Morning: the team packs and loads at the house. The person moving doesn’t need to watch their home disappear into boxes — this is a lovely time for a family lunch or a visit somewhere familiar.
• Midday: transport to the community, arrival inside the booked move-in window, and coordination with the front desk and move-in team.
• Afternoon: the suite is set up completely — bed made with their own linens, furniture arranged like the plan, clothes in the closet, photos hung, kettle within reach.
• Evening: they walk into a room that already feels like theirs. That first night matters enormously, and it’s what the whole day is built around.

Most moves like this take one to three days of hands-on work in total, depending on the size of the home and how much is coming along — the moving-day portion above is usually a single day.

After the move: the family home
